What is a Media Server?

by Jeff Haynie on September 28, 2005

There are so many overloaded terms in the telecom world these days and each term can represent a different view point. What do the following invoke in your mind?

  • Media Server?
  • Gateway?
  • Platform?
  • Browser?
  • App Server?

It’s hard to communicate sometimes because the same word means different things depending on your point of view, architectural position or description of a network element. It now is becoming even more confusing:

  • VoiceXML Media Server
  • MRCP Media Server
  • Conferencing Media Server
  • MRFC/MRCP in IMS/3GPP
  • Gateway/Signaling Media Server
  • Soft Media Server
  • DSP-based Media Server card

Is a gateway a TDM Gateway or a VoiceXML Gateway?

… And the list seems to go on.
