The south also isn't collectively thinking and talking as a whole yet. Pockets of innovation are around RTP, NC, Greenville, SC, Atlanta, and randomly throughout FL. The who-you-know game is still played within the pocket because there is not enough cross-pocket networking going on.

Contrast this to San Francisco, San Jose, Portland, and Seattle. The performance game translates well in the west because it's all about accomplishments and not what city you accomplished something and who you worked with to accomplish that something -- the exception of course is which VC you worked with to get funding, but that's kinda Web 1.0 anyway.

good post Jeff, have some patience, it's getting better ;-) Compared with 20 years ago when I tried to raise seed funding for my first startup, the current ATL startup environment is light years beyond the late 80's old "good ol boys" network that controlled startup funding. Today, with many "west coast" style players moving back to the South, you are slowing seeing a shift, not a sea change, just shift in tech culture and less risk aversion to fund. The efforts of you and others in the StartupLounge are helping to make change happen faster. Also, keep in mind that SV type creativity comes from having 50 years of tech success and the wealth that was created - it's easier to risk money and reward creative thinking when the financial return is not the only factor in the equation. Let's compare notes in another 20 years. ;-)

You hit the nail on the head with this blog...

Until the South turns in to a "what you know" instead of a "who you know" society, we'll always be stuck in this status quo type of thinking.

I'm happy you also noted, "If innovation and creativity are your outputs - then the valley’s performance-based economy is clearly working." ... with the first trip Tom and I took to the West Coast it became apparent to us that innovation is embraced and encouraged. In the South, status quo thinking prevails, and thats a shame, as there are many bright and talented people here among us.

I think this goes along the same lines of some of your previous blog on, [parapharsing] "why isn't there more startup funding in the southeast?". You may have answered your question. ;-)
