Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy

I’m more like the Fat Guy than Dr. Fitness as he’s called. The Fat Guy really isn’t fat, but Adam Shafran is fit and he’s really a doctor.

I met Adam and Lee at SoCon07. I got a cool opportunity tonight to be a guest on the Dr. Fitness and Fat Guy live radio show hosted by Adam Shafran and Lee Kantor. These guys are very fun and good at what they do. While some are just getting into podcasting, these pros have been doing it for almost 2 years — and you can tell.

Probably most podcasts are pre-recorded. Not this show — it was live and streaming in real time. Of course, you can always get it the day after if you miss the live show. These guys said doing live has got a bit of risk associated with it – and that’s what makes it better. They have their own make-shift studio in a office complex here in Atlanta and a studio full of professional recording gear.

This is what’s cool about the new media revolution. Anybody can be a radio star — and if you’re good, you’ll get thousands listening to your show each week like these guys do. Adam and Lee told me they started out just wanting to have a show and tried by first intending to get on AM radio. After finding out that the cost of a one month show was the same as the entire studio equipment purchase, they decided to just buy the equipment and do it online. The rest is history. These guys have a fairly large audience, number one podcast on Yahoo’s fitness podcast section and one of the top fitness podcasts on Apple’s iTunes. What they thought would be their primary target audience at first — men — ended up being exactly the opposite. Their audience of several thousand loyal are almost entirely women. They’re filling a great long-tail niche and having a lot of fun doing it.
